Not in the traditional sense of "milestones" that most parents probably take note of, but for M and I it was huge. So what is the big deal? Drumroll please...Finni started asking "Why?". That's right! And I don't mean once or twice. I mean constantly. Whether getting directions, trying something new, seeing something on television, or watching the adventures of her siblings, she wants to know why it is all happening AND why that is the answer AND why that is the answer to the answer.

Now, if you are like M and I you know that parenting is an adventure. So, at first I tried to answer all of the endless whys. Then, I used the "I'm not sure let's figure it out together" tactic. Finally, I admitted that I know nothing and instead opted for the Socratic method of answering questions with questions. Needless to say, Finni found this endlessly entertaining and had more fun answering my questions than she ever had asking her own.

Ah, I cannot wait to see what new adventures tomorrow will bring. Oh, how we love our Finni Bear.

Our Little "Buggers"!

On Halloween we dressed up the kiddos as two caterpillar babies and a beautiful butterfly!

They looked super cute, as you can see, and did a great job trick-or-treating. It was our first real trick-or-treating trip as a family and it we teamed up with the Ybarra family to take a quick trip around their subdivision. The Ybarra girls helped Finni master the art of getting treats and the twins enjoyed riding in the stroller...most of the time. We had a great time and hope this event with the Ybarra's will be happening again next year! In the Yelding family tradition we stopped by Deeda and Gramma's house for our final treats! We can't wait until next year!

Six Months Later...

So, in case you were thinking that we may have fallen off the face of the planet...we didn't. :)

I am happy to report that, in short, the babies were born, Finni is an awesome big sis, and Morgan and I are doing great. Okay, see you next time! (Just kidding!)

Honestly, the last six months has been a bit of a whirlwind. Instead of trying to cram it all into one big post, I am going to break it down into little, chronological chunks. And we'll start here:

THE BABIES HAVE ARRIVED!

In my last post you can see a very pregnant me and lo and behold the babies were in fact born shortly thereafter. Here's the story:

On Monday, April 14 I was feeling more contractions than usual, but by then I was fairly used to them. I had virtually no early contractions at all with Finni, but the twins had been very active for the past few months and I was used to some discomfort. When I went in for my twice a week monitoring session at the hospital, the heartbeats looked great and all was well. I voiced my increase in discomfort, but the nurse assured me that all was well and that nothing looked unusual so I should be all set. I was walking and talking and felt alright so I left the hospital and went home to rest.

When Morgan came home from work I told him that I was very tired and uncomfortable, but that the contractions weren't coming too regularly so I was feeling pretty confident that I had a couple more days of incubation time. Throughout the night, however, the contractions increased and I knew that it was only a matter of time.

At about 6:45am on April 15 I told Morgan that it was time to go to the hospital. He called the hospital to let them know we were coming and that the contractions were about three or four minutes apart. I took a shower while Morgan loaded the bags in the van and got Finni ready for daycare.

I am the first to admit that the van ride was less than pleasant, but I tried to keep a good face on for Finni so she wouldn't be scared or worried about Mommy. We dropped her off and headed to the hospital. By this time, the pain was pretty much excruciating (and being an English major I do not use that word lightly). Every bump felt like a mountain, and every pothole felt like the Grand Canyon. It was brutal, but we made it and were admitted at about 8:30am.

After a brief wait (I won't even get into that part of the story), I was whisked up to the birthing center. A nurse I was familiar with from my many visits to the hospital "checked things out" and said that I was nine centimeters dialated and that it was go time. When she went to tell the other nurses that we needed to do a c-section for the twins ASAP they seemed confused and wanted her to check again because they didn't believe I was that far along. It seems that my jokes and smiles fooled them into a false sense of complacency, when, in reality, the joking was just my way of coping with the pain. It is interesting what strategies one will find to cope in any given situation.

So, they checked again and the next thing I knew they were throwing a set of scrubs at Morgan and telling him to put the camcorder down and get dressed because it was time to go. The doctors and nurses were working at a record speed by this time because they were concerned that my water was going to break and that the babies would be at risk. I was still trying to stay calm since we had anticipated the c-section due to the fact that both babies were in the breech position. I asked Morgan to call my Dad while I was being wheeled into the operating room. He had about ten minutes to get himself together while they (finally) gave me the spinal anesthesia. I would like to say that the spinal was less painful than the epidural, but it is tough to say since there where so many other pain indicators going on at the same time. I can say, though, that it worked like a charm and in a matter of minutes I was pain free and ready for surgery.

Soon thereafter, Morgan was allowed in the room and had the camera ready to go. From here, I can't tell you much since the curtain was up, but I felt tugging and pressure and just kept my attention on two things: 1) Morgan and his intent focus on the surgery and the babies, and 2) the running narrative I was getting from the wonderful anesethesiologist who stayed in the operating room to give me a play-by-play of what was going on. It was very different from the birthing experience we had with Finni, but it was wonderful in its own special way.

Baby A, Sawyer Morgan, was born at 9:15am and weighed in at 5lbs. and 11ozs., with Baby B, Langston John, following just two short minutes later at 9:17 and weighing in at 5lbs. and 8ozs.. Morgan was just glowing and so excited to witness the whole event, and the mommy in me was just happy that after the babies were out everyone seemed to calm down a bit. I got to see each of the babies for a minute or two and they were just as precious as Finni was when she was born. They "zipped" me back up and covered me in the softest, warmest blankets on the planet and wheeled me back to my room while they ran some tests on the babies. The next thing I knew, they were wheeling the babies into the room and telling us that they were healthy, happy and good to go.

At this point Morgan started calling his family and Nicole's parents came to see the newest additions to the family. At around 5:00pm, Morgan went to go pick up Finni and bring her to meet her new siblings. She was in love at first sight and we were sooo happy to see her after such a long day. She stayed with us in the hospital and was an awesome daughter and big sister every single night.

Througout the week we did our best to follow the doctor's directions and get the babies to eat as much as possible. Although they both lost weight, they managed to stay above 5lbs each and were permitted to be released at the same time as Nicole so that was a big relief. Morgan went and got the van and the next thing we knew we were on our way home!

That is all for this entry. In the next post I will talk about the first weeks home!

Ready Freddy!

Sooo, here are a few much wanted pics of Nic in all her twin pregnancy glory. Let's hope the good behavior thing transfers to the outside world.

In addition to all of our good news, we also found out that Finleigh will have a new cousin early this winter! We are so happy to share the great news that Morgan's sister, Noelle, and her husband, Scott, are expecting their first child in late October! We wish them all the best and know that they will be great parents for the newest little Sinclair/Marshall!

That is all for now...we'll keep you posted with any new info!

Love,

Nicole, Morgan and Finn

Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock...

So, time is dwindling down before the babies arrive...and Nicole is STILL working. Unbelievable. Monday, March 3 was her "goal" date to end work. That was already a week and a half later than what the doctor had recommended, but so it goes. Unfortunately, Finleigh has been sick and needed some extra loving care on Monday so Nicole wasn't able to go to work. As it stands now, she will be finishing up work on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and then be on official leave. Woo-hoo!

Here is the family update:

We got a minivan! Yes, that's right. We are now van people! We are so excited to have our new van and have taken a few little adventures just to test it out. We went to Chicago a couple of weeks ago and it drove like a dream. After much research on the Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey, we ended up going with the Odyssey because we felt as though it has the most features to meet the unique needs that come with having three kiddos that are so little. Finleigh loves riding in the van and our next project is getting her a new car seat and the car seats for the newest additions to the family installed over the next couple of weeks.

The babies are growing! We had our 29 week ultrasound last week and the babies are both doing really well. They are each estimated to weigh just under 3 pounds each already, which is just amazing. In addition to ultrasounds every four weeks, we are now on weekly appointments with our obstetrician and Nicole also has to go in to the birthing center twice per week for "non-stress tests" that check the movement and heartbeats of the twins. We are in the last trimester now and time is flying by!

Finn is an artist-- sort of. Little Finn has taken a keen interest in the arts these days and loves to draw with crayons, markers, and pretty much anything else she can get her hands on. She has (in my opinion) very good dexterity for being just a 16 month old peanut, and loves to show off her talents.

Nicole has been feeling pretty good. All things considered, Nicole has been doing really well this pregnancy. She still doesn't have much of an appetite, but Morgan is very good about encouraging her to eat and keep up her energy. Lately, the favored foods have been Caesar salad with chopped rotisserie chicken, oranges, and yogurt. Her tummy is expanding by the day, but the rest of her looks pretty much the same and the doctor told her the other day that she was the best looking set of twins she had ever seen so that was encouraging.

Morgan is looking forward to meeting the new babies. He is in constant amazement that there are "two in there" and every once in a while he and Nicole both just go "oh my gosh, we're really having twins". It is very exciting!

The house is in utter disarray-- for now. New babies mean new things are needed in the house. Our entryway is clogged with bunches of items we picked up at IKEA when we took our trip to Chicago, along with random other items that need to be moved downstairs to the "mega-nursery". Last weekend we found a new use for a couple of pieces of furniture that we had been using in the office area and moved them into the family room and it has made that living space much more efficient. We still have a few more pieces of furniture to play around with before we set up the nursery, but we still have some time yet.

Well, that is it for this post. Hopefully, Morgan will be able to take a picture or two of Nicole's big tummy soon for you all to laugh at and enjoy. :)

Love,
Nicole, Morgan and Finn

What's Shakin' With the Fam...

Well, here is the family update...

Morgan

Working hard...so hard actually that he fell asleep at his desk the other day! :)

Excited about the babies. He cries at pretty much every ultrasound! Awwww.

Morgan's uncle had heart surgery in Colorado last week and we are happy to report that he is recovering nicely. We sent him some fruit to help him with the healing process.

Nicole

Still working full time, though her days are likely numbered. She is being a trooper and trying to make it it to the 28 week cut-off point, but each week gets a little tougher and she is taking things day by day. She is feeling really good with no problems at all other than a little back pain every now and then. Let's hope it stays that way!

Graduate school is going just fine. Nicole has a MASSIVE thesis paper to complete this semester along with two additional classes, but by May it will all be ancient history and she will be a happy owner of a Master's degree in K-12 Educational Administration. Yippee!

Nic is BIG into politics right now and when the TV is on it is usually tuned to MSNBC, CNN or Fox News to get the latest info. on who is doing what and why. She, and Morgan, are both very excited about the candidates and the prospect of a regime change here in the USA.

Finn

Growth - Finn is growing like a weed! She just passed the 15 month mark and is already stretching the limits of her 18 month sized clothes. Most of the time we just go ahead and put her in the 24 month size even though some of them are a still little bit big.

Skills - She learned to take her shoes off by herself! This may sound small, but it is a huge task for a little munchkin like Finn. She is really good about it and seems to like doing it, though the right shoe sometimes causes her more difficulty than the left.

Vocabulary - After months of "mama", "dada", "yeah", etc. we have an official "first words" for the child..."BOOK" and "BUBBLES". Finn just started saying this over the last few weeks and it is pretty much the cutest thing ever. We attribute "bubble" to the fact that a) two of her favorite books include bubbles, and b) Morgan gives her a bubble bath pretty much every night after she has dinner. As far as "book" goes, she is constantly picking up books and toting them around for one of us to read to her.

Foods - Finn has never met a kind of cheese that she didn't like! The kid loves cheese A LOT (we think she gets this from her Aunt Noelle) and always makes sure that she eats all of her cheese before she touches anything else. She has also been eating pancakes, strawberries, bananas, lettuce, and turkey among other things. She had her first taste of pudding and ice cream (in very small quantities) over the past few weeks and seems to really like both.

Entertainment - Finleigh loves, loves, loves PBS shows (which makes mom and dad very happy). She enjoys Sesame Street just fine, but her absolute favorite without a doubt is a relatively new show called "It's A Big, Big World" that features a variety of animals with all sorts of dilemmas to face each day. The show is created by combining a variety of techniques including old-fashioned puppetry and some high tech backgrounds. It is hosted by a very laid back sloth named Snook and includes all kinds of songs and dances for Finn to enjoy. No matter how grumpy she may be on any given day, this show makes her smile.

Twinclairs

The babies are both doing great! We had an ultrasound today and they are growing stronger every day. Baby A is tipping the scales at about 1 lb. and 12 ozs. and Baby B is weighing in at about 1 lb. and 13 ozs. so they are both closing in on the 2 lb. mark. The doctor showed us growth charts and both babies are right on target for "average" size which made us very happy to hear.

Baby A (the one closest to the cervix) has FINALLY flipped head down and we are hope, hope, hoping that she will stay that way all the way until the babies are born. If she switches back to a breech position then the chances of a cesarean birth are increased so let's hope she stays right where she is if at all possible.

Baby B is very active and has changed positions a bit since our last ultrasound. He likes to s-t-r-e-t-c-h out a lot and we often saw his legs creeping into the pictures of Baby A. He is not head down or head up, but rather in a "transverse" position which is kind of across the top part of the uterus.

Names - We have not selected names for the babies yet, but we are working hard at getting a pool of names we like together so that when the time comes our choices are narrowed down to at least a reasonable amount. We did this with Finleigh, too, and found that it was a bit easier than just branding her with a name before we even met the child.

Well, that is about it I suppose. We'll keep you posted with any changes or news! :)

Love,
Morgan, Nic and Finn

Christmas Cutie!

We apologize for the delay in getting up these pictures of our little sweetie! Perhaps a thousand words will have to suffice.

Sooo much has happened since our last family post that I almost don't know where to start. I suppose that a person by person profile may be the most effective way to break things down:

FINNI

Grandma Sue and Jim came out to visit a couple of weeks before Finni's first birthday. They brought some cool gifts and hung out for a couple of days before heading back to Colorado.

First birthday party was a success. It had a "Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea" theme (after one of Finleigh's favorite books) and we had lots of fun. Finni's favorite present was a bouncing zebra ride-on toy that swivels and bounces up and down. (Way to go, Mom!)

Lots more words! This little one-year old is a talking fool! She has been a little stubborn about the whole walking thing (more on that later), but she loves to "talk". Along with her sign language vocabulary, she has made up her own little language to talk in which is always fun to listen to. Since mid November she has been trying to say "thank you" and "down" and is getting pretty good at both of those words. When she can't say a word, she mimics the tone of the way Mom and Dad say the word or phrase which is really adorable.

Bye-bye, bottles! In late November Finni said goodbye to her bottles and made the full transition from bottles/formula to sippy cups/milk and "big girl food". She had no problems at all with the switch and seems to be liking milk just fine. Her favorite foods are still cheese, crackers, and fresh fruit (especially oranges lately).

These booties were made for walking! Finni took her first three "real" steps on Thanksgiving Day and then kind of went on break for a while. By early December she was up to five steps...and then went on break for a while. On Sunday, Dec. 16, though, she had a breakthrough and basically just took off across the family room. Her strategy? A drumstick in each hand for balance. Her motivation? A giant window that she desperately wanted to bang on. :) Priceless.

MORG-O-SAURUS

Proud Papa. Along with loving husband and miraculous multi-tasker, proud papa is certainly Morgan's favorite title. He dotes on little Finni and loves to get her into little tickle fights that are adorable. He has learned, however, that being the "silly, fun one" comes with the price of also being the one that Finni doesn't always take too seriously. For some reason, when Mommy says "no thank you, Finni" we get results, but when Daddy says it...well, let's just say there is a distinct delayed reaction from our little darling.

Workaholic. In an effort to get some extra savings tucked away for upcoming expenditures (more on that later!), Morgan has been working quite a bit. He is certainly tired and sometimes one day runs into the next, but he is still a family man at heart and is most comfortable at home relaxing with the family.

Holiday Spirit. Morgan, Nicole and Finni recently picked up the family holiday tree. We usually do a small tree and put it up on a plant stand, but Morgan thought that we may want to get a "big tree" this year since Finni will be more able to open presents and things. In the end, we decided to stick with a small, live tree up on a plant stand to keep precocious little Finni out of the pine needles. It is very cute and the same size as last year so we are happy with our selection.

NIC

School's Out! Well, not all school, but at least grad school is done for a few weeks. Nicole finished up the Fall semester with a 4.0 in a rather daunting class on the topic of "Inquiry and Educational Research". It was tough, but she made in through and can see the light at the end of the graduate school tunnel. If all goes well, she will be done with the program in May/June of 2008!

Surprise Visit. Well, kind of a surprise...Janece and Josh came out to Michigan for a few days for Josh's holiday party at work. We only got to see them for a few hours, but it was nice to just hang out and watch a movie like old times.

Other things have been keeping Nicole busy as well, but you can read about that exciting development below...

FAMILY NEWS

Well, if you haven't heard yet then you truly must be living under a rock, but...

WE'RE HAVING TWINS!!

That's right! I said it - you read it - TWINS!! Needless to say, we are extremely excited about this surprising news. As twins do not run in Nicole's family it was a real shocker to find out that we are going to be fortunate enough to have two more little darlings joining us this Spring.

As we are hoping to have a big family (that's right people, we are just getting started) getting a twin pregnancy has been great news for us. Even the nurses at the doctor's office commented on how surprisingly well we took the news and told us that we should run a class and set the example for how to be happy about such an unexpected surprise!

So, on to the usual questions...

When are the babies due?

Kind of a tricky question. Our due date for a "singleton" would have been May 16, but since we have two little stinkers in there it will probably be closer to sometime in mid-April. We'll know more as we have more ultrasounds and get more diagnostic information.

How is Nicole feeling? Do twins run in her family? Did she take fertility drugs?

Nicole has pretty much been feeling fine and has not noticed many differences between her pregnancy with Finni and this "twinkie" pregnancy. She is tired, but managing things well and does her best to rest as much as possible.

Twins do not run in Nicole's family at all. Morgan has twin uncles, but the doctor has told us that it has nothing to do with the papa and everything to do with the mama.

No fertility drugs of any type (trust me, we don't need them)...these are naturally occurring twins!

Are they identical or fraternal twins?

Another tricky question. Each baby has his/her own amniotic sack and placenta (so there is literally two of everything in there). Though some people think that this automatically means that the babies cannot be identical, the doctors have told us at each appointment that it all depends on a couple of key factors. If the twins were caused by one fertilized egg that split into two embryos very early on in the pregnancy then they could be a identical and each have their own sack/placenta (about 1/3 of identical twins develop this way). If the twins are the result of two separate eggs being fertilized then the babies will be fraternal (non-identical).

Long story short, we will not know if they babies are identical or fraternal twins until after they are born and we are able to do a test or two on them, unless we find out that one is a boy and one is a girl (then we will know for sure that they are not identical). Which leads us to the next question...

Are you going to find out their if the babies are boys or girls?

YES!?! We are definitely going to find out. Actually, just this past week we found out the gender of Baby A, but Baby B was not in the mood for sharing at that particular moment. Much to the dismay of others, we are holding all information until we know the genders of both babies so that we can share all of the news at once. Very exciting times!

How old will Finn be when they are born? Did you intend to have kids so close together? How are you going to do it?

Finni will be eighteen months or so when the babies arrive.

YES we have always intended to have children who are close in age. Finni is a very happy, easy-going baby and is going to make a great big sister for these two new additions.

As far as how we are going to "manage" the answer is really quite simple: with love, patience, and a great sense of humor. :) It's the same way we get through every day right now.

Soooo, how about that for a post!?! Pictures will follow as soon as we get our memory card problems figured out.

Love to all!
Nicole, Morgan and Finn

The Fam'

This is the closest we've been able to get to a "family photo". Not the greatest (hey, we are using the auto-timer and working with a baby!), but it works.

Finni is eleven months old now! Here's a snapshot of some recent developments

Verbal communication has increased significantly. We are doing the baby sign language dealie too, but she is a very verbal child. Her current vocabulary includes mama, dada, yeah, mom and....uh-oh. Super cute!

Soooo close to walking. She is an awesome assisted walker and navigates the house without any problems with the help of coffee tables and couches.

Growing, growing, growing. She is wearing size eighteen months clothes. She still fits in the twelve month size, but they are getting tighter by the day. She has a lot more room and seems more comfy in the bigger sizes.

A distinctly "Finn" laugh. A real, genuine "I thought that was funny" laugh that is out of this world. We will try to post it soon.

Lots of new foods...far to many to list. She is mostly interested in whatever mom and dad are eating so that keeps us entertained to say the least.

Other than that, just the usual fun. We have picked out her Halloween costume. No, we're not telling. You'll have to wait!

Love to all,
Nicole, Morgan and Finn

Ten Months Old!

Finni turned ten months old today! She is as brilliant as ever and we are soooo happy to have her in our lives as we continue to love her, and one another, more with each day that passes.

Ten Month Milestones

New Foods - Diced carrots and green beans, crackers, rice cakes, lil' crunchies, milk-soaked Cheerios. The most exciting development, though, is that she is doing a phenomenal job of feeding herself these days. Utensils don't seem to be a priority at all, but we'll get there eventually...

Mobility - Crawling is still the main mode of transportation, but assisted walking is certainly the preferred method. She gets braver by the day and it is very interesting to watch her calculate which risks she is willing to take.

Teeth - There are two teeth on the top just waiting to bust on through. Of course, we will post pictures when they do. :)

Favorite Activities

Drums - Finleigh's theme song right now might as well be "I don't want to work! I just want to bang on the drum all day!" She is completely enamored with her drum sets and is rarely seen around the living room without her precious drumsticks.

Stories - Morgan does a fantastic job reading to Finn and she just loves it. She just relaxes completely and listens to his oh-so-animated voice. Adorable!

Bath Time - Although she wasn't a huge fan of the bath tub right away, Finn loves taking baths now. She is very curious and loves playing with her toys in the suds and water.

That's it for the update for now! Little Finni has been working on her flexibility. Of all of the weird ways she twists and bends, this one is by far the most entertaining.

Life has been pretty busy for us lately...

Morgan has been working quite a bit and has lots of projects. He is looking at taking some more classes this Fall, but wants to keep balance with work, family, and school and is sensitive to the fact that Nicole is in the home stretch of her graduate work.

Nicole has enjoyed a short break from grad school and is gearing up for another year at Black River. Although the state of Michigan has mandated that all schools must have a post-Labor Day start (to encourage an extended summer for tourism), Black River has a waiver due to the college-prep curriculum and test schedules so school will be starting on *gasp* August 23. Between now and then, Nicole will be facilitating orientation for new faculty and students and getting things ready for the new year. So many discipline referrals, so little time.

Finleigh has been trying new foods and enjoying a few new toys - a phone and two drum sets. She likes the phone, but she LOVES the drum sets. To date she has: baby bongos, a snare drum with sticks, a xylophone, bells, and a rattle/shaker. The child certainly has musical aptitude. Hmmmmm, I wonder where she got that from... :)

That's it for now! We will try to post again sooooon! Love to all!

Nine months and counting...

Finn turned nine months old today!

She is such a happy-go-lucky baby and she certainly spoils us as much as we spoil her. This month was a full of fun for Finn:

After lots of practice in months seven and eight, she mastered crawling and is now a "speed crawler" who is just itching for her chance at her first steps. She easily navigates the living room as a bi-ped simply by grabbing end tables, couches, and whatever else she can get her hands on. It is both amusing and amazing to watch her explore her environment.

New foods this month included lots of organic fruits and veggies such as honeyrock melon, tomatoes, and strawberries (her favorite).

First "independent stand" happened this week. Morgan squealed with excitement which, in turn, scared/surprised Finn and caused her to fall down. Ah, well. It was fun while it lasted.

First trip to a golf course. Granted, she didn't do a whole lot besides watch her lame-o parents swing at and miss balls on the driving range (we did better on the putting green), but she loves being outside so she didn't mind a bit. Her Uncle Jay picked up the tab for the balls so that made it an even better family event!

And so, as we move on and look forward to her next milestone and all the joys that the future will bring, we pause to celebrate our baby girl and all that she has brought to our lives. :)

Stories and Pictures and Updates!
